Broncos withstand late Titans push for win

BRISBANE fended off a second-half comeback to claim their fourth win of the season, 24-16, over the Gold Coast at CBUS Stadium.

His side seemingly down and out trailing 22-6, Titans forward Zeb Taia grabbed two tries in the space of four minutes to threaten an upset, the score suddenly 22-16, in front of a big home crowd.

But a 77th-minute penalty by Brisbane winger Jordan Kahu sealed a hard-fought win.

Brisbane led 10-6 at half-time after tries to former Titan James Roberts, who required pain-killing injections for a hip injury at the break, and halfback Ben Hunt, with fullback David Mead capitalising on a lovely Ashley Taylor grubber to score for the Titans.

Mead had earlier come from nowhere to pull off a classic try-saving tackle to bundle big Broncos winger Corey Oates into touch in the left corner.

"They're a really gritty side and they just keep coming at you," said Hunt, who had his best game of the season.

BRISBANE 24 (James Roberts, Ben Hunt, Jordan Kahu, Kody Nikorima tries. Corey Parker goal, Jordan Kahu 3 goals) bt GOLD COAST 16 (Zeb Taia 2 tries, David Mead try, Ash Taylor 2 goals).
