Broker claims owners unaware of insurance after Marcia

PETER Peirano doesn't get it.

He's seen business closure after business closure in the past three weeks after Cyclone Marcia and it's got him thinking.

Mr Peirano, owner of Piranha Insurance Brokers, said he was concerned that local businesses might not be aware of what they can claim as a result of Cyclone Marcia.

"It's important that businesses understand they can claim for their losses of stock as a result of the cyclone," he said.

"Businesses need to be contacting their insurance brokers and asking for the right advice and help.

"Majority of insurance companies are only too willing to reimburse them for their losses.

"Businesses may be closing for their own reasons but if they weren't insured then they shouldn't have been open in the first place."

The local insurance expert believes business owners in the area may not understand how the insurance system works.

"Under Commercial Insurance, section one, you have your fire cover and other natural disasters which cyclones come under," Mr Peirano said.

"Section two is business interruption and loss.

"You also have another section which deals with machinery breakdown and loss of food or spoilage. You don't have to have spoilage or machinery breakdown in order to claim because the primary trigger was a cyclone.

"There is no need for a lot of these businesses to be doing it hard as they just need some decent advice.

"Insurance companies will pay for whatever the loss of gross profit was if they are adequately insured.

"We started off with 200 claims and are now getting closer to 400 claims. Businesses shouldn't have to close if they were insured," Mr Peirano said.

  • Talk to your broker and make sure you are satisfied with their answers.
