Six Tannum Sands crews eye top prize at Australian titles

THE day of reckoning has arrived for a group of Tannum Sands surf boat crews.

Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club's six crews will compete in the Australian titles beginning in Perth today.

The 2013-14 season has been a resounding success and the crews in Western Australia now have the opportunity to impress on a national scale.

After winning five gold medals at the Queensland titles in early March, the Tannum Sands club is in hot form and has high expectations.

After returning with a silver medal last year, the under-23 women's team, nicknamed the Sweetcheeks, will lead the team into battle, with the first task to make the finals.

"Realistically we are a good chance of getting five crews into the finals," sweep Tony Davis said.

"We are trying to avenge last year when we were in front with 50 metres to go and we got beat by a metre."

While winning any medal would be an achievement to celebrate, the team returning with no prize to show for the journey could easily be seen as not living up to expectations.

"The crews aren't focussing on the states, they are looking at these titles," Davis said of the expectations.

"We have got to step up for this one."

The preparation has been seamless for all bar one of the crew, with Sweetcheeks member Nikki Cooke struggling with a back injury for the past week.

The team is hopeful Cooke will be at full fitness.

Taking on the best in the nation, Davis knows how important every stroke is and he is confident in each and every one of the Tannum Sands representatives.

"We have got to get on the water and make every stroke a winner," he said.

"Every crew is in good spirits and I am confident we will represent the club well."
