Acting city patrol inspector Adrian Rieck said the man was not a local from Sarina or the area.

"It is alleged at this stage that a male person was armed with a knife and has proceeded to confront the staff of the hotel," Insp Rieck said.

He said witnesses were able to leave the hotel and go to a nearby business and ring 000.

ONLY one police car remains in Broad Street after a reported armed robbery at the Sarina Hotel this morning.

There are a few people on the street and cars driving along as if nothing has happened but a sign on the door of the Sarina Hotel suggests otherwise.
