VIDEO: 'Six loud explosions' before car blaze in Clinton

UPDATE 4.25pm:

Station officer Mark Erridge said he understood the owner of the car that caught on fire in Clinton this afternoon had recently had it serviced.

"Reports from the driver was that there was smoke issuing from the rear of the dash panel," he said.

"It appears to have been a malfunction or chemical short-out of some sort within the electronics or potentially the computer system of the vehicle behind the dash."

UPDATE 3.55:

AN EYE witness to the blaze said he came out of his house and saw black smoke above the palm trees.

He said he thought it was a house on fire until he saw the car.

Another person at the scene, Vicky Myer, also described what she heard when the car exploded.

"I heard six loud explosions, and thick black smoke blanketed a section of the street."
