Brave little girl still smiling after dog attack, surgery

SOUTHSIDE mum Jessica Wild is full of admiration for her daughter, 5, who has emerged smiling from a dog attack last weekend.

"We were at my sister's new place at Widgee and the dog, an Alaskan Malamute, just bit her on the face.

"The dog had never shown any aggression before and was only chained up because we were swimming and she wanted to chase the cattle.

"(My daughter) wandered past her and the dog just bit her without warning."

But the little girl, whose name has been withheld at her father's request, was, as Ms Wild puts it, "just amazing."

Despite facial injuries that required 33 stitches and plastic surgery in Brisbane, she did not scream or panic, and still likes dogs.

"She wasn't fazed by it. For her age, she's incredible.

"That made dealing with the situation a lot easier.

"She'll need a second operation to fix her nose in six to 12 months time.

"She's doing very well."

Ms Wild, however, was not so calm after the incident.

And none of that was helped by the area's notoriously bad mobile phone reception.

"I was really upset and having no phone reception made it worse," she said.

"I was only half a metre away but there was no warning, no growl or bark.

"I naturally feel guilty because I could not help.

"I'm so thankful to the people at the Widgee Store.

"We had to go there to get a landline to call the ambulance.

"She went to Gympie Hospital by ambulance and they booked her in to the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane where she had surgery the next day," she said.
