Boxers punch above their weight

ISLAND Sands boxers Jordan Lindley and Zac O'Connor fired up with a big local crowd behind them at Gladstone PCYC's fight night on Saturday.

Island Sands head trainer Russel Thompson was pleased with the performance of young fighters Jordan Lindley and the rangy Zac O'Connor in their respective fights against Kirk Dumschat and Reece Bowden.

Lindley's extensive training saw him tip the scales at 55.7kg, but with no other fighters in his division he had to give away nine kilograms to fight Impact Boxing Club's Dumschat.

Lindley showed plenty of heart against his larger opponent but ultimately lost in a points decision.

“I gave him a big pat on the back for doing it, afterwards,” Thompson said.

O'Connor was Island Sands' other fighter on the card and he outclassed and overpowered his Rockhampton opponent Bowden in a unanimous points decision.

In just his fifth fight, O'Connor pushed his height and reach advantage, landing some savage left hooks that sent Bowden's mouth guard across the ring on a number of occasions.

Thompson felt the imposing youth still had room for improvement but was thrilled with the imposing youth's display of quick footwork and brutal combinations.
