Bombers deny Gatto allegations

AFL: Just when you thought the Essendon doping saga was finished, the Bombers are fighting fresh allegations linking them to underworld figure Mick Gatto.

Dual Bombers premiership hero Dean Wallis and ex-team services manager John Elliott claimed club bosses reached out to underworld enforcer Gatto, who allegedly removed injections regimen emails and covered up cocaine use, sexual harassment and fraud.

Victoria Police confirmed it was investigating "following a report of a blackmail matter”.

"As this investigation is ongoing, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time,” a spokeswoman said.

In response, Essendon chairman Lindsay Tanner said: "Two disgruntled ex-employees have made a number of false and unsubstantiated allegations against the club. For example, allegations of ... dealings with Mick Gatto are false.”

Gatto called a press conference in Lygon St, but refused to answer any questions on the claims, saying he would appear on television later in the day.

"All I can say is two things, be watching tonight and you'll hear all about it,” he said.

"The second thing is I really have no comment to make and I can't at this stage.”

He said he called the press conference to get reporters away from his home.

"There'll be a scoop tonight. Be watching,” he said.

"You're not going to draw me into it.”

Asked if it was a paid interview, Gatto replied: "No. It's not.”
