Man charged with explosives count after Hervey Bay siege

UPDATE 6AM: 

POLICE  have charged a man following a siege in Kingfisher Drive, River Heads yesterday afternoon.

A 31-year-old River Heads man has been charged with one count each of possess weapon, possess explosive, possess dangerous drug and possess utensils.

He is expected to appear at the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on January 28.

 

UPDATE 5PM:

THE police bomb squad have been called from Brisbane to inspect a Kingfisher Drive home for explosives or firearms after a man has been taken into custody.

Police officers surrounded the River Heads home this afternoon and called in negotiators to talk to the man held up inside the house. 

Wide Bay-Burnett Acting Superintendent Paul Biggin said the man was now in custody but it would take the bomb squad between four and five hours to arrive on scene.  

He said they believe there could be explosives or firearms inside. 

A part of Kingfisher Drive remains cordoned off by uniformed police officers and marked police cars.
