BMW X2 continues the crossbreed revolution

BMW has answered another automotive question never asked with its new compact X2. What happens when you combine a small crossover, sports utility vehicle and a coupe.

Well, you get a sports activity coupe.

Scheduled to reach showrooms during March priced from $55,900 plus on-roads, the new genre-straddling offering is appeals to those chasing ride height of an SUV with a sporty character.

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder good for 141kW and 280Nm. It can reach 100kmh from standstill in 7.7 seconds.

It's a trail previously blazed by the polarising BMW X6 and the X4.

The X2 falls in the small premium SUV segment, where it will come up against the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. It is based on the BMW X1 SUV, but is shorter, wider and lower.

Boot space is a reasonable 470 litres.

Among the standard gear is the iDrive6 infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen (8.8-inch screen is an option), rear spoiler, LED headlights which corner when you turn, automatic high beam, power tailgate, cloth/alcantara trim, M leather steering wheel, sports front seats, parking sensors front and back, rear view camera and sat nav.

Safety incorporates automatic parking, lane departure warning, autonomous brakes which can stop the car to avoid pedestrians or forward collisions.

The M Sport X package is fitted as standard, which includes contrasting lower exterior cladding in grey, and also grey horizontal sections to the front bumper, along with matching 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the cloth/alcantara trim has yellow contrast stitching.

Choose the M Sport Package as a no-cost option and it includes a body kit, different alloys, while inside there is blue interior stitching.

"We are excited to be adding the BMW X2 to the small premium SUV segment,” said BMW Group Australia CEO, Marc Werner.

"The X2's dynamic stance and highly efficient turbocharged petrol engine combine with outstanding connectivity and infotainment systems to create a sporty vehicle of outstanding versatility,” he said.

Beemer train-spotters will note it wears the all-important double kidney grille is mounted lower than the hexagonal LED headlight sections, while the bottom section is wider than the top.

It also sees the return of the c-pillar roundel, made most famous by the legendary BMW E9 Coupe that debuted in 1968.

BMW X2 Innovations Package ($2600): Driving Assistant Plus including radar cruise control and stop-go, Navigation System Plus, BMW Head-Up Display, ConnectedDrive Freedom including Concierge Services.

Comfort Package ($2700): Electric seat adjustment for driver and front passenger, with memory function - Lumbar support for driver and front passenger, seat heating for driver and front passenger, exterior driver-side mirror with anti-dazzle function and keyless entry.

Style Plus Package ($3300): 20-inch BMW M light alloy wheels in double-spoke style 717 M (style 716 M is also available), metallic paintwork, panorama glass sunroof.
