Bluebirds in sight of finals

BLUEBIRDS have leapfrogged Frenchville into fourth place on the Cap league ladder with a 1-0 away win over Clinton on Saturday.

Frenchville are now three points adrift of Bluebirds but have a game in hand in what is shaping up to be a desperately tight battle for a top four spot and subsequent finals berth.

A win for Clinton would have seen them move in to the top two on the ladder on goal difference after Yaralla smashed second placed Nerimbera 4-1.

Clinton coach Derek Horton said it was a missed opportunity, but that he was impressed at the quality of football on display.

“It was a pretty high quality game actually, I was disappointed to lose but not really disappointed in our effort,” he said.

“It was a very fast game and both sides shut each other down very quickly.

“There were very few goal-scoring opportunities for either team; I think they only really had one and they scored, we had three for the game and we didn’t so I suppose that was the difference.”

Clinton can still finish second with their last round clash against Nerimbera at home looming as an important fixture.

“If we can win this week then we play Nerimbera at home in the last round, assuming they win as well we’ll be playing for second spot,” Horton said.

Across town at Central, the home side thrashed Beserker 4-1 in a goal scoring frenzy that leaves Central with a mathematical hope of reaching the finals with two games to play.

Central are now just four points shy of fourth-placed Bluebirds and could reach the finals if results go their way in the twilight of the regular season.
