Bleijie appeals sentence of man who violently attacked woman

ATTORNEY-General Jarrod Bleijie has appealed the jail sentence handed down to a man who severed his then girlfriend's tongue and slashed her face.

Mohammed Tasleem Tahir was sentenced in Southport District Court on October 16 this year to eight-and-a-half years in jail for grievous bodily harm, following the 2010 attack on his then girlfriend.

Tahir bashed the victim with an empty rum bottle then slit the corners of her lips with a knife and severed her tongue.

He is currently eligible for parole on September 12, 2013.

Mr Bleijie will challenge the penalty based on the view the sentence was manifestly inadequate, did not set an adequate deterrent and was not in line with community expectations.
