Bitter-sweet for Gladstone teams in Intercity soccer finals
SOCCER: Clinton have backed up from last weekend's 3-1 grand final win over BITS with another against Cap Coast in the Men's Intercity Challenge decider.
In what was player-coach Jeff Jackson's final game, the home side dominated to win 3-0 and complete a perfect season.
Adam Richardson was one of three goalscorers and was also Player of the Match.
Jevan Raghoobar and Scott Rouse also scored.
Frenchville women, led by grand final Most Valuable Player Peppa Hoare, claimed the title of best female team in Central Queensland with a 2-1 victory over Gladstone-based Meteors .√
Livvy Dean made most of a penalty and free kick to score both Frenchville's goals.
Meteors' defender Tori Van Vegchel said missed opportunities proved costly and admitted it was difficult to get up after the previous weekend's deciders.
"That played a big part and last weekend we thought 'we're done' and it threw us off guard a bit that we had to play another grand final," she said.
But she offered no excuses.
"We made two errors which resulted in a penalty and an indirect free kick," Van Vegchel said.
Liana Radisic scored Meteors' only goal which was set up by her sister Maja.
"It came at a time when we were playing well and smart," Van Vegchel said.
"But for the rest of the game, we were flustered. We attacked, but couldn't finish off our opportunities."
She said Meteors' better players were defensive pair Ainsley Downie and Danielle Fenwick and they were strong and first to the ball.
Van Vegchel's mum Jean also produced critical saves as goalkeeper.
