BITS look to tie up Muddies

THE round’s A-grade AFL Capricornia results have left four teams tied on 20 points with only two rounds left before finals begin.

Brothers (44) and the Swans (32) sit clear on the top of the table with BITS, Panthers, Glenmore and Gladstone separated in that order only by percentage.

The Mudcrabs shocked Yeppoon Swans with a tight one-goal win on the weekend while Glenmore had few answers against BITS.

The Saints showed a rare glimpse of their dominance from previous years as they defeated the travelling team 21.12 (138) – 4.8 (32) during their A-grade game on Saturday.

It took Glenmore over half the game to find a goal as the Saints marched the score out for a solid lead.

On the odd occasion they did get close to putting the cherry through the middle in the first two quarters, the Saints would kick into action and promptly put the ball through for six at the other end.

At the middle break it was 5.7 (43) – 0.0 (3) in the home team’s favour.

The visitors looked like turning things around at the start of the second but their elation was short-lived.

Glenmore managed to put two quick ones away to claim their first goals of the game but BITS answered in the form of John Beirouti who continued to slot most attempts before injuring his hamstring. Beirouti ended the game with nine goals.

The Saints continued to run away with the game as a lowly Glenmore conceded the 106-point defeat.

Saints play table-toppers Brothers next week before Muddies in the final round.

BITS player/coach Adam Dickenson toted the win as “the best game of footy we’ve played all year.”

He was glad BITS had “started to click” but told The Observer they had to defeat Gladstone in their final round if they wanted to contest the finals.

“We really must beat Muddies, obviously we have to try and win this weekend but we have to beat Muddies,” Dickenson said.
