Bird grounded after Super League game gets ugly

RUGBY LEAGUE: Former NRL bad boy Greg Bird has been suspended for his part in a spiteful English Super League clash between Catalans and Leigh.

The former Gold Coast and Cronulla star was one of six players charged after his Dragons fought back to down Leigh 40-36.

Bird has been outed for one week after pleading guilty to punching while teammate Fouad Yaha was also banned for one match for punching.

Bird was earlier the victim of an ugly incident after he and a Leigh rival collided off the ball.

With both players lying unconscious on the ground Leigh forward Jamie Acton grabbed Bird by the jersey, lifting him before pushing him back to the ground.

Acton has been charged with a Grade F offence of "other contrary behaviour”, which carries a minimum ban of eight games if he is found guilty.
