Big win ends year for U15 softball development squad

THE under-15 development squad continued its winning streak this week, defeating the Psyclones 6-3 in a blockbuster afternoon of softball.

The victory came after the squad smashed the Souths A-grade women's team last week at Memorial Park Reserve, Gladstone.

Saturday's win was the squad's last for the year as Gladstone Softball wraps up for 2012, with the squad to play Telfords in their first week back on January 12.

Michael Noonan steered the team to a 2-1 lead in the first innings and was considered one of the best players of the match.

Pitcher Rebecca Watson performed well for the Psyclones.

U15 development squad coach Merv Downing said he was proud of the team's efforts.

"The development squad is a really strong team," he said.

"They play a fast-paced game and we get more innings.

"I suppose it's a tactic to wear the other team out."

A highlight of the two-hour match was 12-year-old Bailey Stone's performance in the centre. He led the team in a double play.

Downing said the Psyclones were a strong team, as were Souths, but the squad seemed to have the upper hand over both.

The squad is faster and younger than the other teams and that's how we get up," he said.
