Big trial day will have the Roosters crowing

RUGBY LEAGUE: Luke Dyer said his partnership with Shane Byatt as the Calliope Rooster women's co-coaches will stand the team in good stead ahead of the season.

Roosters will take on Tannum Seagals in what will be a day of trial match action tomorrow at Bunting Park in Calliope.

Dyer has a wealth of experience and played one NRL game for Penrith in 2004 and 120 matches for Castleford Tigers and Hull Kingston Rovers in the Super League.

Dyer also played several test matches for Wales.

"Shane and myself will be helping each other out and he has a personal trainer background while my focus is on skill-based training,” Dyer said.

He said that the numbers are healthy which means that competition for spots is healthy ahead of the season proper in two weeks.

"The girls just want to learn and want to listen,” Dyer said.

"We have 26 registered players and four more to be registered.”

The female Roosters team won the premiership two years ago and has two players from that team returning.

"We have Cara Moore and Jasmine Jones coming back from the team that won the grand final in 2015 and we also will have a few debutants this year,” Dyer said.

With the demands of shift-work and the chance of injuries, Dyer said there won't be any issues in player shortage.

"The proof is in the pudding and none of them want to leave,” Dyer said.

"We have plenty of people to cover.”

The men's team will be a part of the Rockhampton Rugby League reserves competition after winning the 2016 premiership in the Gladstone and District Rugby League.

"We've got players who have returned after two or three years,” team manager Nathan Dodds said.

"Gavin Burgess is a hooker and utility and Benny Hough, who is a second or front rower, both return.

"We also really appreciate for Biloela and Valleys Diehards to come out when they did not really have to.”
