Big swell hampers Tannum IRB crews’ campaign for glory

TANNUM Sands Surf Life Saving Club's inflatable rescue boat (IRB) crews had a tough outing in rough conditions at Coolum over the weekend.

The event was the third round of competition in the Ocean Roar IRB series, and was also the third outing for the Tannum Sands club in years.

Thrown into two-metre conditions at Coolum, the Tannum Sands crews, racing under the Wide Bay Capricornia banner, were unable to make any finals and missed out on earning any points in the series, which was the main aim of the team.

"It was just luck of the day," captain and coach Cliff Harvey said.

"You can have all the training in the world and it still happens."

The teams were able to compete well on the Saturday, which saw events moved to better conditions at Noosa, and they made the quarter-finals.

But when the carnival continued on the Sunday back in 1.5-metre swell at Coolum, the rough conditions prevented the Tannum Sands athletes' progress.

The women's open crew were disqualified from the semi-final of the tube rescue, while the masters men slipped out of their boat and were unable to continue.

"The disqualification was unfortunate, but more a result of this being our first season," Harvey said.

The first taste of action in the big conditions will help Tannum Sands in the future.

The fourth round of the series is on the Queen's Birthday long weekend at Stradbroke Island, which looks like it could have a similar swell.

"Wave conditions could well be up," Harvey said.

"It has three beaches and gives us the opportunity to go to the smallest waves."
