Big Pineapple deal on the cards

THE Big Pineapple could be in the hands of new owners within weeks according to the woman writing a book on the Queensland icon.

Kerry Brown has been holding off on publishing Our Sweetest Icon until she could pen a final chapter on the fruity attraction's future.

But as she planned a reunion for Big Pineapple fans and staff, she was contacted by the group deep in negotiations for the attraction about holding it at the Woombye site once the deal went through.

"There is news of a possible new owner," Ms Brown said.

"I can't say who the owners are.

"But there is a local connection and they are South-East Queensland based."

Ms Brown said she would keep the identity of those involved under wraps to ensure that no obstacles appear in the deal being signed off.

"This is such a positive thing for the Sunshine Coast," she said.

"Their plans, from what I'm told, is to restore it to its former glory.

"We forget how beautiful it was.

"Their plan is to reinvent the concept, promoting agriculture with tourism.

"In some respects they will re-invent the wheel."

The celebratory reunion is in honour of the Big Pineapple's 40th year - it opened in August, 1971.

"We have been asked to postpone the reunion for a few weeks so we can hold it at the Big Pineapple.

"They are confident they will take site ownership in early September, have a tidy-up and we will hold the event in late September."

News of the possible deal follows a failed bid by the Bowden family to acquire the tourist attraction to use as a base for their extensive car collection.
