The massive event, which finishes on Sunday afternoon, holds $10,000 worth of prize money and attracts bowlers from as far south as Brisbane to as far north as MacKay.

Local bowler Steve Buffier says the yearly competition has been going since 1977.

"I first played in 1985 when it was still a pairs concept back then," Buffier said.

Fellow Gladstone player Tony Wyper said the format changed to a fours competition so that it could attract more players.

After Friday night's deluge, the greens withstood the rain well and will quicken up on Sunday with fine weather forecast.

"The greens were very slow, but good after more than two inches of rain," Wyper said.
