Big change for mum and son

AT 45 years old, Colin Duvill is finally moving out of home.

In a matter of weeks, he will pack his bags and move into one of the two new "smart homes" built in Gladstone for people with a disability.

Intellectually impaired, he has been dependent on his mother Ingrid his whole life.

Following her husband's death a few years ago she is relieved Colin has somewhere to go in case something happens to her.

"I'm going to miss him," Ingrid said.

"Forty-five years is a long time to look after somebody. It will be a shock to both of us."

Ingrid believes Colin will take a while to adjust.

"I don't think he realises what is happening," she said.

But she is excited to watch him gain more independence and have more people around him.
