HEADING to the big smoke doesn't have to come with a price tag to match.

We've pulled together some of the coolest things we could find that are totally free for you to do in Brisbane.

Comedy: Every Friday night, the Brisbane Powerhouse becomes a hive of belly laughs and crazy comedy - all free of charge. Enjoy an hour of hilarious and surprising comedy from 6pm every week.

Live Music: Brisbane is home to the largest free live music program in the country, so there is a fair chance you'll stumble upon a live gig in the city centre with City Sounds. Local and touring bands perform on the stages at the Queen Street Mall, Post Office Square South Bank and other locations around the city.

New Farm Park: There are parks… and then there is New Farm Park. This is one of the city's most popular parks and it's obvious why. Grab a picnic rug and park yourself under a tree on the river's edge and watch the boats cruise up and down, or throw a Frisbee around with your mates.

Mount Coot-tha: Get yourselves out of bed before dawn and watch the sun rise over the city from the Mt Coot-tha lookout. Grab a coffee or stay for breakfast at the café.

Queensland Museum: Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Explore the natural world through the Queensland Museum's Discovery Centre and Wild State exhibitions. General admission to the museum is free, with plenty to see, while some special exhibitions are ticketed.

Brisbane Greeters tour: Want to see the city like a local? Then look out for the smiling faces in red T-shirts. Brisbane Greeters are a group of volunteers willing to take you and your mates for a tour around the city, sharing stories and history along the way. More on the Greeters HERE.

Hang out with some cute koalas: South of Brisbane, the Daisy Hill Koala Centre is home to a number of koalas who can't be released back into the wild. It's free to enter and besides the resident koalas there is plenty of information about them. The centre sits within Daisy Conservation Park, so after a little marsupial viewing plan a short walk through the bushland.

Swim at Wynnum Wading Pool: Built during the 1930s depression period, the Wynnum Wading Pool is a tidal concrete pool that's popular with children at high tide. Pack a picnic or pick up fish 'n' chips nearby and make a day of it by the bay. At low tide the kids can chase soldier crabs on the foreshore or splash about the aqua playground.
