Bennett supporting Bundaberg port redevelopment

REDEVELOPING the Bundaberg Port could help solve the Wide Bay's unemployment problems.

LNP Burnett MP Stephen Bennett said a number of businesses had expressed interest in setting up at the port on the back of the Knauf plasterboard facility and the under-construction gas pipeline.

State Development minister Dr Anthony Lynham announced in Queensland Parliament on Tuesday the government was continuing to investigate establishing a development area at the port.

A report released this week from anti-poverty organisation the Brotherhood of St Laurence found youth unemployment across the Wide Bay - including Bundaberg, Gympie and the Fraser Coast - was at 20.6%, among the highest in the country.

Mr Bennett said he was aware of "two or three" other businesses that had expressed an interest in the port area on the back of the Knauf plasterboard facility development.

"Hopefully the domino effect will see more investment," he said.

"There are two or three other businesses going to be directly linked to the plasterboard factory."

Mr Bennett said he was "reluctant" to name the businesses looking to set up at the port.

He said approval work on the gas pipeline had begun under the former LNP-government and he was pleased to see Dr Lynham continue that work.

He said the Bundaberg Port had been the "poor cousin" to the Gladstone Port and had been "disused and dis-loved" for 20 years.

On Tuesday Dr Lynham said the Bundaberg Port was ideally located as it was the only port other than Brisbane located south of the Great Barrier Reef protected zone. - ARM NEWSDESK
