VIDEO: Barnaby Joyce talks up Central Queensland

ACCORDING to Barnaby Joyce, it's easy to tell Rockhampton is the cattle hub of the nation.

"My gosh, you see it as soon as you leave the airport," he said.

"It's horns and testicles all the way to the middle of town."

The Federal Minister for Agriculture and National Party deputy leader talked up Central Queensland's potential, describing it as the "Dallas of Australia".

The visit bought the entire National Party to the Beef Capital to tour the region's priority industries.

High on the list was a visit to CQUniversity's Central Queensland Innovation and Research Precinct with Capricornia MP Michelle Landry.

Ms Landry said she planned to push for Rockhampton to be considered as the new home of the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation.

In May, Mr Joyce announced plans to move the RIRDC to a regional area with strong agricultural links and the backing of a university.

While there was no indication of whether Rockhampton was successful, Mr Joyce said bringing the party room to Rockhampton was the first step.

Mr Joyce said there was money on offer for Central Queensland in the Northern Australia Plan and committed to mounting a case back in Canberra.

Mr Joyce said water infrastructure, including the Eden Bann and Rookwood weirs, were also hot topics for discussion during the visit.

Flynn MP Ken O'Dowd took National Party leader and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss and other MPs to Duaringa, where several farms will be impacted by Rookwood Weir. Mr O'Dowd said they would also be looking at farmers' innovative on-farm water storage solutions.
