Toowoomba beauties rev up for rods, rockabilly

MISS Rods and Rockabilly is not your average beauty pageant.

Toowoomba "greaser gals" Brianna Kaehler, or Miss Anna D'Amour and Melanie Lovell, Miss Diamond Divine will combine their love for cars and pin-up and compete in the 2nd annual festival in Brisbane this month.

"It started off with the cars. I love those '50s old-school Chevys and Dodge pick-ups and decided to try pin-up," Ms Lovell said.

"I always loved the fashion but was a massive tomboy. Pin-up brings out that other side of me."

Now she works on cars from home with her partner and also owns four of her own.

A wardrobe alternating between work clothes and full-circled skirts gives Ms Lovell the chance to dress according to her mood.

"If I'm in the mood where I don't want to speak to people I'll dress to fit in. Although I have purple hair so it can be hard to blend in.

"But when I go 'casual pin-up' lots of people from that era talk to me and tell me I brought back memories.

"Pin-up is still a subculture in Toowoomba but we're hoping to bring it out."

Entrant Brianna Kaehler is a 23-year-old teacher and a second generation hot-rodder from Toowoomba.

She got into pin-up when she was younger after seeing all the beautiful girls dressed in circle skirts and vintage dresses.

Event organisers said the Miss Rods and Rockabilly pageant stood out from others because of the sense of friendship and acceptance, with the 12 entrants chosen regardless of age, shape or looks.

The Miss Rods and Rockabilly pageant is on March 21 at the Hamilton Hotel, Brisbane.
