A QUEENSLAND man behind a world-first wall-mounted foldaway barbecue is sizzling with sales, a US patent and accolades a year after launching.

Gold Coast plumber Ryan Martin has sold 2500 SpaceGrill BBQ after dreaming up the idea one day on his deck.

The 45-year-old said he was frustrated with BBQs taking up so much space when not in use so he started designing wall-mounted, foldaway options.

"It was a small area and there was hardly enough room for the BBQ let alone the family and I thought why couldn't I have a BBQ that when you are done with it, it's out of the way," he said.

The result is the fully stainless steel SpaceGrill which sells for $1399 a pop.

He now has the Australian patent for SpaceGrill and after four years recently finalised the United States patent.

It won an Australian Good Design Award last year and has also started to get people salivating in the UK where it has been short-listed as a 2017 Design Week Awards finalist in the furniture and product category.

"In Australia we've sold 2500 and haven't really got it out there yet. We're just starting to get it out there," he said, adding if he can boosts sales to 10,000 a year he'll be happy.

"At $1399 they are not a cheap BBQ but it's full stainless steel and the best thing is when it folds down it captures all the fat."

Mr Martin said while his focus would be to continue to boost sales in Australia, he saw a bright future for his product in the United States.

"America is the logical next place for expansion for the SpaceGrill BBQ. American are big BBQ-ers. We see a bright future for our product in the US."

The SpaceGrill is gas-powered but Mr Martin is working on a prototype of an electric model.
