Gladstone horse eyes a place at local race day

FINDING a winner among the stacked field of the Melbourne Cup is a difficult task, and trainer Lee Kiernan is hoping to make the job of backing one as easy as ever for punters.

It is how the past five months have gone with his gelding, Base Jump, anyway.

The Gladstone horse has blitzed nearly every field it has taken on since June, and the local trainer is hoping the gelding does the same at Ferguson Park, Gladstone today.

"It is a little bit tougher company now," Kiernan said. "The 850m will be quick."

But speed is something Base Jump is used to, blowing away fields in Bundaberg and at Ferguson Park.

In fact, he has won four of his last five starts, including the last two in Gladstone, and Kiernan is keen for a trifecta.

The only problem is the quality of horse he is competing against.

Despite beating a Benchmark 75 field, including rival Blaze to Fortune, it is another step up to Open Handicap today.

The big thing in Base Jump's favour, though, is the form and confidence, as well as the sand track, which he loves.

"Any sand track with a bit of give in it, he goes all right," Kiernan said.

"He has pulled up real good. He had no effects from the last run at all."

Nor should he, a win in esteemed company proving Base Jump's worth.

Punters should expect him to be in the mix again today.

In fact, as long as his temperament remains as it has been recently, Base Jump will be in the places.

"I have had him only a couple of years," Kiernan said. "When I got him he was a handful.

"In the last six months he has come good - a nice temperament.

"I think there is a lot of racing left in him now."

Kiernan has changed his mind on how to train the horse as well, aimed at longevity.

It has unlocked the key to Base Jump's strong runs.

"In between runs we don't put him through too much," he said.

"The owners are very happy and love him."

Base Jump:
