Meet the locals: Voice behind the calls at basketball

BARRY Maluga has been calling basketball games in Gladstone since June 1975.

He says basketall is the best sport - fast and action packed.

"Every game is really different and enjoyable for me," he said, while calling the match at Kev Broome Stadium at the weekend.

"And yes I've used the same microphone. A little dinged up, but it still works great.

"At half time and in time outs, I play a little music but it's not what we would've played back in the day.

"It's whatever the players like and the crowd enjoys, so it's mostly modern stuff."

Mr Maluga was a coach for many years.

"Games have really evolved since I started," he said.

"They used to play outside and the games were slower. Nowadays it has really picked up."
