Barnaby Joyce: My bloody face is a lesson to all of us

HE IS the man in the wide-brimmed hat who was once described by actor Johnny Depp as looking as though he was "inbred with a tomato".

Now Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has taken to talking frankly about the deep and literal scars left on him after he spent too many years ignoring the message to be "sun smart".

He posted an image from AAP on his Instagram page, taken at a press conference on Wednesday, with bloodied patches of red marking his face.

They are the result of a cream that acts to burn cancers from his face.

He wrote: "I took part in a press conference today like a walking advertisement for why you should wear a hat.

"Cancers on my face are being burned off with a cream so I'm going to look like this for a few weeks. It doesn't add to my complexion, but some say it doesn't take away from it either.

"So if you're in the sun, cover up, or you'll be looking the same in a few years' time - and you just don't know what you'll have to front up to.
