Bali flight chaos as Virgin reacts to volcanic ash plume

VIRGIN Australia has cancelled all flights in and out of Bali today, as volcanic ash threatens the skies above the popular tourist destination.

Jetstar cancelled four flights on Tuesday and one today between Bali and Adelaide, Perth and Singapore.

Two Jetstar flights between Melbourne and Bali scheduled for today have been delayed.

Unpredictable winds are pushing the volcanic clouds towards Denpasar Airport, according to Jetstar, which cancelled three flights on Tuesday.

In a statement, Virgin Australia has said it has been told by the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre to suspend the flights to Denpasar Airport.

"WE have been advised that Mt Raung continues to erupt and winds are blowing in an unfavourable direction, and are forecast to continue to do so for the rest of the day," it read.

"Therefore Virgin Australia has cancelled all flights into and out of Denpasar today, Wednesday 5 August."

The airline planned to release its next update at 7pm.

This is the second time in the past month that Australians travelling to or from Bali have been put out by Mount Raung's volatility.

In mid July, Jetstar and Qantas dispatched special flights to the tourist mecca to help stranded Australians return home.

Those travelling to Bali need to confirm their flights and potential delays or cancellations with their carriers.
