Bail for man charged with killing cat, throwing tomahawk

A TOOGOOLAWAH man who police allege killed a cat and threw a tomahawk at an officer has been granted bail.

During a bail application on Thursday, the Brisbane Supreme Court heard Bodie-James Amos allegedly stabbed a cat to death and bashed the cat's owner in July, 2015.

Police said they found Mr Amos armed with two knives and a tomahawk. He allegedly threatened them before getting in a car and driving away, and a police chase ensued.

The court heard when police eventually stopped him, Mr Amos allegedly threw the tomahawk at a female police officer before he was tasered and arrested.

Mr Amos is facing three charges of serious assault of a police officer, one charge of serious assault of a police officer while armed, and counts of going armed to cause fear, deprivation of liberty, dangerous driving while drunk, assault occasioning bodily harm and deprivation of liberty.

He has been in custody since being arrested - a total of 263 days.

Justice John Bond said the offences were "gravely serious".

A psychiatric report found the offences were "out of character" for Mr Amos and might have been caused by depression following the collapse of his relationship with his partner.

The court heard Mr Amos was off prescribed anti-depressants at the time of the alleged incident.

Justice Bond released Mr Amos on bail on the conditions that he does not drink, submits to random drug and alcohol tests, lives with his grandparents and takes any medication prescribed to him. - ARM NEWSDESK
