Backpack beds high in demand after wet weather

A TOOWOOMBA homelessness support service says they've been "blown away" by the increase in demand for backpack beds since the recent wet weather.

Base Services' Nat Spary said recent rain had seen a huge demand for waterproof backpack beds from people who are sleeping rough.

In good conditions the service typically hands out 5-10 backpack beds a week, but that has spiked to 20+ in recent weeks.

If you would like to donate to Base Services so they can purchase more backpack beds - which cost $110 each - you can transfer money to BASE Services Inc, BSB 034 221, A/N 629 828, with the reference Swag (your surname).

Cheques can be made out to Base Services and mailed to PO Box 2216, Toowoomba, or you can drop into 10 Neil St.

"Backpack Beds are waterproof and that's the big thing. There's nothing worse than getting wet clothes and a wet blanket," Mr Spary said.

"They get dirty a lot easier and clothes and towels and blankets can get mouldy and it's just not healthy for people."
