Back to good deeds

IT HAS been a big couple of days for Gladstone Region's new Citizen of the Year, Cheryl Wickes, culminating in Australia Day celebrations at Seventeen Seventy yesterday.

Unaware of her forthcoming gong Cheryl had not planned to attend the Australia Day Awards ceremony, but organisers encouraged her to do so and for a good reason.

Cheryl was overwhelmed with the recognition, but it was back to doing what she does best yesterday, working tirelessly to ensure the Australia Day festivities at Endeavour Park in Seventeen Seventy went off smoothly.

"It's lovely to get the acknowledgement (the award), but really I took one for the team,"' Cheryl said.

"There are a lot of people here who work hard for the community, so it's for all of us really."

As part of the 1770 Festival committee Cheryl was yesterday organising the many fun activities and raising money for, and the profile of, the 2012 Captain James Cook 1770 Festival in May.
