Record number of Aussies in running for Academy Award

THE nominees for this year's Oscars have been announced and Australia has record number of people in the running.

Fifteen Australians have been nominated for an Academy Award this year, including Cate Blanchett for her role in the film Carol, a romantic drama.

Blanchett already has two Academy Awards under her belt: She won best actress in 2013 for her role in Blue Jasmine and best supporting actress in 2004 for her role in The Aviator.

Australian film Mad Max: Fury Road and several of its creators has also attracted a long list of nominations, including George Miller as best director and Miller and Doug Mitchell for best picture. The film is also nominated for best cinematography, costume design, film editing, make-up and hairstyling, production design, sound mixing and visual effects.

Mad Max: Fury Road is expected to rival The Revenant, which has 12 nominations.
