Aussie weightlifter detained by police in Glasgow

FRANCOIS Etoundi, a member of the Australian Commonwealth Games team has been detained by police over an alleged altercation at the athletes' village in Glasgow early on Wednesday morning.

Fairfax Media has been told Scottish police will allege that Etoundi, who won a bronze medal in the 77kg class weightlifting, assaulted a Welsh athlete.

A Team Wales spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday night that a member of their Commonwealth Games team was assisting police.

Police Scotland said in a statement on Wednesday that a 29-year-old man had been detained after police responded to a report of a disturbance at the 35-hectare village, located nearby Celtic Stadium in the city's east end.

It is understood the athlete is being held by police and is due to face Glasgow Sherriff's court on Thursday. He remains in police custody.
