"Hot Aussie guy" makes good in Modern Family US TV debut

SUNSHINE Coast native Jye Williams has launched his acting career on America's award-winning comedy Modern Family.

The miner-turned-model only started taking acting classes last year after moving to Sydney to take up a job with Vivien's Models.

The 22-year-old makes his debut in Sunday's Australian-filmed episode of the sitcom, playing a "hot Aussie guy" who catches the eye of Sarah Hyland's character Haley Dunphy.

The episode aired in the US, where it boasts up to 13 million viewers, on Thursday.

"It was such a good experience to be on such a large set, especially an American TV series," he told APN.

"I wasn't sure what to expect on the first day I came on to the set. There were trucks and crowds and cameras all over the place."

Williams' character meets Haley when she is browsing in a souvenir shop.

"I'm meant to be an Aussie fling kind of thing. It's a flirty scene I guess," he said.

"I only got one line. It wasn't so much what I had to say, but more saying it in front of such a big crowd."

Williams said he was impressed by the family atmosphere on set. The show is now in its fifth season and has won 18 Prime-time Emmy awards.

"It looked like it was their second family on set, so it was good to see them all getting along together so well," he said.

"They were really welcoming.

"I had good chats with the younger cast and Phil (Ty Burrell)."

But if it wasn't for an abrupt end to his work in the mining industry, Williams never would have landed the role.

"A year ago there was no way I'd' see myself doing something like this," he said.

"It's funny how it all works out. If I didn't get made redundant then I'd still be there (on the drill rigs)."

Filmed in and around Sydney and in the Whitsundays in February this year, the Australia episode of Modern Family sees Burrell's character Phil Dunphy fly his extended family for a break Down Under.

Also making guest appearances in the episode are Kiwi actor Rhys Darby, Peter Phelps, The Gods of Wheat Street's Mark Coles Smith and Gold Coast beauty Marissa Wynne as a topless Bondi beach babe.

Modern Family's Australia episode airs tomorrow at 6.30pm on Channel 10.
