Aussie girls won’t dwell on the past

TENNIS: Australia's Fed Cup captain Alicia Molik has denied her team will be burdened by the weight of history in the semi-final tie against Germany, starting in Brisbane today.

The Australians have not won the Fed Cup for 40 years, but a full-on preparation has consigned that record out of the players' minds.

"It's a very busy week. Days go past very quickly," Molik said.

"We have a number of training sessions and by the time the girls get treatment, have team dinners, you don't really spend too much time dwelling on that.

"It's more about planning for the ultimate preparation, making sure the players are accommodated for and getting what they need."

Australia's most experienced player Sam Stosur, the 2011 US Open winner, said Angelique Kerber would be a massive threat.

Kerber is ranked No.7 in the world.

"Kerber's been in the top 10 now for a couple of years," Stosur said. "We played each other in the semi of the US Open a few years ago. She's just kept going up and up and up. She knows how to play these big matches."

Australia holds an 8-4 advantage over Germany in the Fed Cup but Stosur said her team would need to be at its best to win this tie.

"We can do very well, but we're also going to have to play very well," she said. "It's certainly not out of our reach to get over this team."
