ATO does not make threats of arrest

AUSTRALIAN Taxation Office assistant commissioner Thomas Ryan says his staff makes thousands of outbound calls to taxpayers a week, but they would never threaten them.

"Generally the ATO would send an SMS or letter to remind you that a payment was due," he said.

"If we don't get a response from this, we would then call you to discuss payment."

If the ATO calls and you are concerned about providing information over the phone, ask for the caller's name and phone them back through the ATO switchboard on 1328 69.
