Athletes on the run again

PLENTY of athletes turned out for Gladstone Athletics Club's first meet of the season.

Club president Trish Smith said last year the club had 150 athletes register for the season, and after the first of two trial days on Saturday, it looked as though numbers would be well up on that this year.

"It was really popular," Smith said.

"Numbers were up and there was lots of new families."

She said she thought the high numbers were for a variety of reasons, including the fact there had been an influx of people to the town.

Also, everybody was still excited about the Olympics and watching the world's best athletes compete.

But she said the reason most families were attracted to the sport was its social nature.

"Family, fun and fitness is the motto," she said.
