Around the world in two-and-a-half years
TWO men quietly left Stanthorpe on Thursday for the journey of a lifetime.
Ronald Hof and Raymond Van Soest will drive their Toyota LandCruiser from Stanthorpe to the Netherlands.
It is not for charity and there are no commercial interests, they wanted to take a piece of Stanthorpe back to their original homeland in Hapert, Netherlands.
The first leg of their journey will take them to Darwin, then after a few months break they will pick the trip back up by taking a freight boat to Indonesia, then they will take ferries through to Malaysia.
From there they will travel through south-east Asia, then they'll head north to Russia, take a freight liner to the southern side of Japan, take a boat again to Alaska then south to Canada and the US.
"When Trump becomes president we'll take a boat from Vancouver to Mexico. I'll avoid the USA," Ronald said.
Then they'll travel through the south of North America to Panama, then a boat to Ecuador, then Peru and another boat to Brazil.
After South America they will take a boat to Senegal, then finally travel north to Holland.
"We want to drive it to the Netherlands in two and a half years," Ronald said.
Their Toyota LandCruiser has been completely customised by Stanthorpe businesses including M & D Auto Parts and Wayne Evans Upholstery.
Six months and $20,000 of works were completed on the vehicle to prepare it for the around-the-world trip.
Although Ronald will be there for entire journey, he may have to do some parts alone as Raymond will return to run the Sommerville Valley Tourist Park.
"The first 10 days at least we'll do together and last 10 days we'll do together," Ronald said.
