Young cricketers take on CQ's best

GLADSTONE Power skipper Peter Turich leads a virtual department of youth into combat in this weekend's Central Queensland Cricket Championships in Biloela.

The Power will take the youngest open team in recent memory into the clashes against Callide Valley and Central Highlands as evidenced by 17-year-old Turich's selection as captain.

Gladstone Cricket selector Paul Taylor said the unavailability of several senior players, including brothers Grant and Troy Webster, had resulted in the naming of a young side.

However, he said those named were in form and was confident they would get the job done.

'We've got a lot of young players, but they're also very capable,' Taylor said yesterday.

Taylor said selectors had decided last year to gradually bring the city's talented youngsters into the top side and while some have been promoted earlier than expected, their form was enough to warrant selection.

Taylor also expected Turich to prove his leadership credentials in Biloela.

'He's got a great cricket brain and he's had plenty of Queensland experience in the juniors,' Taylor said.

Turich will also have the experience of BITS captain Jaysen Chilcott and Calliope pair Scott Tippet and Garry Eddy.

Perhaps most pleasing for selectors is the fact that although the open side features a number of players who qualify for under-21 competition, Gladstone's under-21 outfit still appears formidable.

The under-21 side will meet with Callide Valley today and a composite side involving players from Rockhampton, Callide Valley and Central Highlands tomorrow after the Highlands were unable to raise sufficient numbers for a standalone side.

Open: Peter Turich, Daniel Williams, Jaysen Chilcott, Lucas Hall, Scott Tippet, Justin Brown, Garry Eddy, Jay Stevens, Mick Kiriazis, Liam Kirk, Jason Seng, Steve Austin.

Under-21: Nathan Rabnott, Dion Porteous, Cory Matthews, Josh Walters, Peter Ferguson, Ross Stephenson, Matt Lanzon, Josh Worley, Dan Gelder, Kris Hadley, Anthony Williams, Will Smith.
