Win one of ten boats at the Hookup
THE Observer's Boyne-Tannum Hookup has made it to its 10th birthday, but to hear the tales of the organisers it's a wonder it's still here.
Not only is the Hookup still here, it's thriving with $150,000 in cash and prizes, including 10 boats, to be given away this Queen's Birthday long weekend from June 10 to 12.
But according to Hookup committee stalwarts Darryl Branthwaite and Zach Simmons, who have been there from the beginning, it hasn't always been plain sailing.
"One year, the whole hard drive (on the computer) collapsed the night before. We were up all night fixing it,'' Mr Branthwaite said.
"One year we didn't work the tide out right and it was going down and we gunned the boat. We nearly didn't get out.''
Mr Simmons said the idea of the Hookup came about as an attempt to increase tourism in the area.
"As we've got one of the best natural harbours on the east coast, we decided to host a fishing competition,'' Mr Simmons said. "So Daryl Branthwaite, Paul Simmons, Ned Beaumont, Tom Mulder, Robin Shepherd, and myself decided to put it in place.
"In the first year 518 competitors took part. We had $15,000 in cash and prizes. Now we've got $150,000.
