Wallabys and Brothers dominate Raiders squad

WALLABYS and Gladstone Brothers players dominate the Gladstone Leagues Club Raiders senior representative rugby league team named this week.

Wallabys have supplied seven players and Brothers six to the Raiders squad which is one of the strongest to wear the Gladstone colours in recent years.

Selectors have opted for form over past credentials with all players named having shone in pre-season trial matches.

Fitness was also an obvious concern for selectors, with the players named among those in good condition at this early stage of the season.

However, the makeup of the squad is not set in stone with other players to be given the opportunity to win their way in through outstanding form or through injury to squad members.

The Raiders' first assignment will be the senior divisional trials in Rockhampton on the Anzac Day weekend (April 23-25). The team's first training run is at Marley Brown Oval on Wednesday at 6pm.

An under-19 Raiders squad is expected to be named next week. Meanwhile, Gladstone rugby league fans will enjoy a double dose of action when the Central Queensland Extended League premiership kicks off this weekend.

In tonight's A grade clash, Wallabys will look to continue their impressive pre-season form when they tackle a previously unseen Biloela at Marley Brown Oval.

Tomorrow, competition heavyweights Gladstone Brothers and Rockhampton Brothers clash in a keenly-anticipated season opener. In the remaining matches, Valleys face a tough first-up assignment when they taken on home side Yeppoon at Webb Park while CQU Norths meet Fitzroys at Rockhampton Brown Park. Both games are played tomorrow.

Tonight's Marley Brown Oval matches begin with under-19s at 4pm. Tomorrow's action starts at midday. Gladstone Leagues Club Raiders open squad (in alphabetical order):
