Walkers needed for trek around Oz

IT was a disappointing start to Lisa Acton's walk around Australia for Gladstone Hospital's oncology de- partment last weekend, prompt- ing pleas for help.

Co-organiser Raymond Lewis said less than 1000 kilometres had been walked on the 13,964 trek, well below the expected 4000 kilometres to be covered for the weekend.

Twenty treadmills have been sta- tioned outside Kmart for the world record attempt.

'The community hasn't really been very responsive,' Mr Lewis said.

'All we are asking is that they spend five minutes on a treadmill for the chance to win a $1500 holiday to the Whitsundays.'

Ms Acton was equally disap- pointed.

'If everyone just came down and did that five minutes we'd be able to do it easily,' she said.

'We got off to an awesome start with the team from Bill Robertson Toyota and Kapers coming down to help out. We just need more like them.'

Mr Lewis said so far donations were going well, and that they would be approaching the community through the week to build on that.

The event will run until until Friday. Interested people may present themselves at Kmart.
