Turbos claim second surf boat carnival title

THE Tannum Turbos under-19 surfboat crew juggernaut continues to roll on with another outstanding victory in yesterday's Freshwater Surf Carnival in Harbord, NSW.

Crew sweep Tony Davis said his young charges had struggled early, showing weariness from a long week of training and competition, but showed their class when it mattered in the finals.

The crew of Matt Bellert, Joel Sherwood, Jason Bedford and Shannon Chynoweth lifted to finish two waves ahead of their nearest opponents in the semi-finals before winning the final by three lengths despite starting in the tough alley five.

The victory, in a boat borrowed from the Mona Vale club, followed the Turbos' triumph at the Manly Surf Carnival last Saturday.

'It was our best row of the week,' Davis said. 'We came down here to win two carnivals and that's what we did.

'It's been a hard week for them, they've been training every day for two hours and the seas have been up all week.'

The Turbos' next contest the third round of the VB Queensland Cup at Coolangatta on Saturday and Sunday.
