Turbos build up surf boat momentumtitles momentum
THE Tannum Sands Turbos un- der-19 surfboat crew continued its impressive build-up to national competition with a victory at the Manly Surf Life Saving Carnival on Saturday.
The crew's coach and sweep Tony Davis said the result au- gured well for tomorrow's Fresh- water Australia Day Carnival.
"They rowed well all day (on Saturday). We won, in the end, by a comfortable margin but it was hard-fought,' Davis said.
'Austimer, the crew we were most worried about, didn't make the final but The Caves gave us a fright in the final ... there were some good crews there.'
The Turbos quickly adapted to a boat they borrowed from the Mona Vale club as their craft remained in Caloundra prior to con- testing round three of the VB Cup in Coolangatta this weekend.
The victory helped the crew overcome the disappointment of finishing third after being hit by a big wave at the second round of the VB Queensland Cup at Tugun earlier this month.
It was indicative of the crew's approach to competition that a third placing against some of the state's best outfits could be met with slight disappointment de- spite the Turbos recovering well in the race.
Their desire for victory will be needed during a busy period dur-ing which the crew will also back up after the Coolangatta event to contest the Australian Surf Row- ers League Open and premiership finals in Wollongong next month.
