TANYA Clarke never expected to pay $3 million for a car ? she never thought it would be so cheap!
The hairdresser was the winning bidder in The Observer Modern Living Expo Funny Money auction yesterday, taking away the much sought-after Toyota Corolla.
'It took a lot of determination ? I harassed everybody I knew to collect Funny Money for me and I spent about five hours every night cutting coupons out of the paper, but it was worth it,' Tanya said.
She said she had decided from the beginning to collect Funny Money for the car and was not going to give up until she had it.
'I bought papers in bulk from the newsagents and my family and friends have been collecting papers and giving me coupons to get as much (Funny Money) as I could for the auction ? I think I ended up with about $8 million,' Tanya said.
Tanya said she had thoughtabout what she would do if she was the successful bidder for the car.
"I've already got a car, but I'll probably sell this one and use the money for a house deposit ? I've had a bit of a rough time lately, so this will be the start of a new life for me and my kids,' she said.
Tanya said she had a lot of support from family and friends and was thrilled to win the car, saying it was 'a dream come true''.
'I can't believe it ? I'm in shock, my hands are shaking ? I feel like I'm going to cry, it's just unreal,'' she said.
'I thought it would go for a lot more than it did, but I'm glad I collected a lot of coupons, because I would've been disappointed if I'd just missed out.'
Most of the other lots in the auction went for more than $1 million in Funny Money, including the corner lounge suit, the queen-size bed ensemble and the split system air-conditioner.
