Tenants sought for new shops at New Auckland
CONSTRUCTION of a new shopping centre at New Auckland will begin as soon as the developers appoint a tenant for the complex's convenience store.
Architect and designer of the project, Steve Matovic of Matovic and Partners, said the modern sub-tropical style complex would have an additional 11 shops for which tenants were being sought.
'We have already had some expressions of interest, but we've just started marketing the complex,'Mr Matovic said.
'We are optimistic that construction could begin as soon as a major tenant is found for the complex.'
The shopping centre, whose end cost is estimated to be about $2.5 million, was to rise on the corner of Beak and Shaw streets and would be highly visible from Dawson Road.
Mr Matovic said it was also likely that a 24-townhouse accommodation development would be built nearby at the same time as the construction of the shopping centre.
Both are projects of Merranda Pty Ltd.
The main tenancy, the supermarket, is 1000 square metres with shops ranging in size from 78 square metres to 251 square metres.
Mr Matovic said the shopping complex would be different to others in the city.
'The design is subtropical with wide three-metre overhangs to form an open and airy pedestrian mall suited to Gladstone's climate,' he said.
'It will have a very modern setting and will be nicely landscaped, and there will also be more parking space than is required by council.'
He said the two-storey townhouses with big courtyards would be in similar style to the shopping complex.
Marketing agent John Fieldus of Ray White Gladstone said tenancies could include such things as a medical centre, a bottle shop, a bakery, a coffee shop, a hairdresser and a restaurant.
