THE SAND is set to scorch when members of the Tannum Sands Surf Club take to the beach for the third round of the Summer Surf Series at Tugun on the Gold Coast starting today.
Tannum Sands has taken 10 members for the popular two-day carnival which will attract more than 1100 competitors from 55 clubs Australia-wide.
Leading the charge is state champion Ryan Bartholomew who will line up in the beach flags and sprint events.
Bartholomew has been in fine form of late and is expected to use this event as a warm-up for the state titles in March.
Club head coach Brian Carroll is expecting a tough carnival, with the focus on personal performance rather than placings.
'This weekend's carnival is one of the largest around with people from other states, it is going to be a tough carnival,' Carroll said.
'Just being here is a big buzz for our competitors and we are just hoping they can perform at their best.
'The experience of being here is going to really help our younger competitors when the states roll around.'
Talented under-17 trio Arnika Tieman, Dominique Gleixner and Teneille Koenig have also had top seasons to date and are hoping to continue that form here.
Tieman's strength lies in the surf and board races, while Koenig and Gleixner should feature in the beach events.
Senior star Clint Swanton is in action and faces a big ask against the quality field he will line up in, while Jared Onions is also in the mix at under-19 level.
Completing the Tannum team is the adept under-15 quartet of Katie Craig, Jessica Lawrie, Jessica Bauer and Nicola Harper.
