Teens smiling after state wins

GLADSTONE Athletics Club members Michael Whitten and Thomas McGuire are smiling after their impressive performances at the recent Queensland State Championships in Townsville.

The long trip was worth it for the two 14-year-olds, who were able to lift their performances for the competition.

Thomas did not have enough room left in his bag after winning gold medals in four events ? discus, hammer throw, shotput and javelin, while Michael's sharp improvement saw him leave with a silver and a bronze.

Thomas, who is coached by his mum Lynelle, is a longtime member of the club and was over the moon with his performances.

"I couldn't be happier, I was very happy with how it went. It was good to leave with four golds,'' he said.

Michael, on the other hand, joined the club just a year ago and has impressed many with his great improvement in the 800 and 1500-metre events.

"I was pretty happy with the way I ran. To run two per-sonal best times was what my coaches (Kathy and Rick Hughes) were looking for,'' he said.

The pair are now training for the State Little Athletics carnival in Brisbane next March.
